My name is Adam Stern and I am the creator and administrator of Polarwarming.ca. I launched the Polar Warming Initiative in November, 2006 as means to bridge the gap surrounding the limited public knowledge of Canadian Arctic geopolitics.
The mandate of this website is dedicated to the ongoing research and content development of current Canadian Arctic geopolitical issues and events. Support for the maintenance and continued growth is made possible in part through Google’s ADSense.
Website Creation
Between the fall of 2004 and spring 2005 I completed an undergraduate thesis through the Political Science program at
Carleton
University. My research thesis assessed the relationship of the deteriorating Arctic polar ice mass and its impact upon Canadian sovereignty. During the course of researching my thesis I found it difficult to obtain a wide scope of literature on the subject. Reasons for the difficulty included the notion of the relationship between melting sea ice and its impact upon sovereignty being a relatively new concept; also in the academic context there exists few experts on the topic.
What originally struck my interest towards the Canadian Arctic was the idea of it being one of the last remaining isolated places in
Canada and for that matter the rest of the world where the idea of “frontier” is synonymous with the region. Combining this curiosity with the conventional wisdom that the
Arctic is considered a microcosm in terms of the global effects of climate change (due in part to its unique environment) made it clear that the region will eventually transform into a political hotspot.
